A closed terrarium creates its own moisture cycle. It needs little care, but observing it is the best way to know what it needs.
The essentials
Inside the container, water evaporates, condenses on the glass and returns to the substrate. The right light and humidity keep this cycle going with very little intervention.
Place it in a stable location with plenty of light, away from radiators, draughts or sudden changes in temperature.
Avoid direct sunlight on the glass: it can greatly increase the temperature inside and damage the plants.
A closed terrarium is not watered on a fixed schedule. Before adding water, observe the glass, substrate and plants for several days.
If the substrate looks dry and there is no condensation at any time, add very little water, preferably with a spray bottle or dropper. It is easier to add water than to remove it.
Plants need indirect light. The integrated lighting helps enhance the display, but it should not remain on all day.
Maintain a regular cycle of light and darkness. Recharge the battery via USB-C when necessary and avoid using the lighting while charging if the unit heats up.
Remove dry or damaged leaves with clean tweezers. If a plant grows too much, prune only what is necessary so the others keep enough space and light.
Clean the outside of the glass with a soft cloth. For the inside, avoid chemicals and only intervene when necessary.
Your best indicator
A small amount of moisture at certain times is normal. The important thing is to observe how it changes throughout the day.
The cycle is working properly if they gradually appear and disappear.
Observe the substrate and plants. If everything is dry, add a minimal amount of water.
Open the lid for a few hours to ventilate and close it again when the humidity drops.
Small allies
Both help the Eternal Garden maintain its balance, although each one serves a different purpose.
Moss absorbs and retains some of the terrarium's moisture, helping the environment stay humid and stable for longer. It also protects the surface of the substrate and completes the natural look of the display.
Springtails are tiny organisms that feed on fungi and decomposing organic matter. They help recycle natural waste and reduce mould growth, which is why they form part of the ecosystem's clean-up crew.
A living ecosystem
Make small changes and allow time for the terrarium to regain its balance.
Choose small species that tolerate high humidity and indirect light. Before adding them, remove excess soil from the roots and check that they are free of pests.
Do not fill all the available space: the plants will grow. After any change, observe the condensation for a few days and avoid adding water automatically.
Quick diagnosis
This may indicate excess moisture, insufficient light or plant adaptation. Remove the affected leaves, check the condensation and change only one condition at a time.
Remove the affected area with clean tools and ventilate for a few hours. If it reappears, reduce the humidity and check that no dead leaves remain.
Check the light, substrate moisture and temperature. Avoid watering immediately if the inside is already damp.
Open the lid to help evaporation. If water has collected at the bottom, remove it carefully and let the cycle stabilise before closing it again.
Frequently asked questions
There is no universal schedule. Water only when the substrate and prolonged absence of condensation indicate a lack of moisture, and always in small amounts.
It is not recommended. Plants need a period of darkness and excess heat can alter the humidity inside. Use the integrated light for a few hours.
No. Open it to prune, remove leaves, correct excess humidity or add a plant. The less a balanced terrarium is disturbed, the better it preserves its cycle.
